What Happens to Our Pets After They Die?

December 7, 2011

Angels, Guest, Spirit

As a psychic medium, I am often asked if animals continue to exist after they die, and if they are able to come through. The answer is always a definite “yes!” These wonderful creatures actually stay around their owners for a long time after their crossing. And according to those who had had “near-death-experiences,” pets often were among the first to greet them after they left their bodies.

I have had many experiences of receiving messages from animals; many times the animals actually give me their names and even show me their favorite activities and toys. When I first started getting these messages, I was surprised at what I was receiving because, after all, animals do not normally “speak” to us in the same way humans do. However, these experiences showed me that pets are much more aware than we realize of what went on in their lives and are anxious and able to communicate with their owners after they have left their bodies. They want their owners to know they are still with them and love them very much.

When my dog Chelsea died, the vet gave me a pamphlet to read that talked about how we can deal with our grief after losing a pet. I found it very helpful, until I read something I certainly did not agree with. It said that there were a number of normal things that owners experience after losing their pets. One sentence stated, “One of the most disturbing yet normal signs of grief is a hallucination of your pet. “Hallucination” means you think you hear, see, feel, or smell your pet’s presence in brief flashes.” I shook my head in disbelief as I read it. The reason that it is “normal” to experience seeing, feeling, or smelling our pets is because they actually do come to us after they pass.

As I was writing the previous paragraph, in front of me I saw a vision of a flattened earth. I immediately knew what the angels were telling me. Hundreds of years ago, people thought the world was flat and laughed at those who had thought otherwise, but how wrong they were! It is the same with anyone who does not believe in the existence of God, the angels, and the eternal soul of all living things.

I do know one thing for sure – after they leave their bodies at the end of their lives, the skeptics will see for themselves that they had been wrong in denying the existence of their eternal soul. If they would have understood this beforehand, it would have brought them and their loved ones so much more comfort and peace when they were still here on earth. Oh well, it’s better late than never.

But back to pets! Losing a pet is more painful than most realize. Often those who do not like animals or do not have a pet cannot understand how we can grieve so much for them. They do not realize that animals were very much a part of our family, and were – and still are manifestations of complete unconditional love. The best part is that their beautiful souls continue to exist after their physical bodies have died. This is not something I think or believe. This is something I know without a doubt. My wish is for you to know this too. :-D

Angel blessings to you!

    Hi Karen,
We lost our cat with a terrible way last week. I realized how painful is considering the fact that I mostly love dogs than cats. It was a shock for me and my family. Even if it continues to exist it is hard to accept the fact.
Thank you for sharing your point.

I just wanted to add that I, too, often sense my pets who have passed on into Spirit. They’re “just hangin’ out” with me most of the time, but they’re *definitely* there. The more intuitive development work I do, the easier it is to sense them, and that’s had the added bonus of making their physical loss much less of a loss.

    Hi Karen,

My cat passed away many years ago and I use to see her in my dreams and at times I felt her presence on my bed. This is so true. They stick around their owners after they pass. I still miss her.

I believe every word you say and find it extremely comforting. We love our pets with all our hearts and grieve horribly when they are taken from us. A small comfort to me is that I have my pets cremated individually and keep the ashes nearby. I know that’s only what’s left of their bodies here on earth, but I feel better having them near me. Both my neighbor and his wife reported hearing, smelling and feeling their deceased dog in their bedroom after he passed away. I never doubted it for a minute. Thank you for your wonderful post!

I swear my beloved Carly came back to life in our new kitty. He does so many similar things to her we swear she was reincarnated or channels through Jake. So, no I can’t dismiss the idea that they come back and visit spiritually. I think there is a lot we don’t understand regarding our pets and the afterlife.

I believe this…during psychic readings had two separate psychics mention my white rabbit – she and I had a big connection and then I had to leave her behind when I went through a relationship breakup. She laid like a rag in my arms the day I left.

I went back to visit several times…then she passed and has been mentioned. I feel her and now have a dachshund who has similar energy!

    Thanks Aleigh for posting!

    This, this, this!

Some stay around longer than others: our first dog, Galen, stayed around for years, visiting us in dreams and showing us that he was helping other spirits, human and animal, to cross over. Our second dog, Bella, was so ready to go, she just shot out of here! (I realised, when she died, that she was and is my guru.)

The other night my fiance woke me up crying (it turns out she was sleeping) and I instantly woke up wanting to know what had happened, and what was wrong. She had been dreaming of her cat (She had to put him down because of kidney problems when he was only young) and seeing his face as he’d looked at her while the vet was putting him to sleep.

She put the cat down 6 years ago, which shows you just how long our pets can have a strong effect on us even after they are gone!

It is a wonder why every girl from age 6-10 goes through her “horse/animal phase.” I think it has a lot to do with her divine feminine spirit identifying/resonating with the greater Spirt (exhibited in all animals). I have found it very enjoyable connecting with my pets throughout my life and it has always been them choosing to accompany me as much as me them. It is such a unique relationship! And just as any significant relationship we need to grieve its passing, but also accept and release their spirit to its next phase.

Karen I’m a huge animal lover and even flew home from Vietnam to the UK when my beloved cat Sootsy was about to be put down (she was nearly 20). Some people laugh and think that’s crazy but animals can mean so much to some people.

I really enjoyed your post:) I think they stay with us just like people do:)

Seems like you know within yourself when they are hurting and can respond appropriately, so I understand how painful it would be to lose them. I cant even think of that at the moment.

We just said good bye to our Great Pyrenees Ghost last month. We rescued her from the pound when she was three. For about three days we (my family) kept going to the door to let her in. You can still hear her bark. She pops in and out. All my pets that have transitioned pop in and out as well. There’s no mistaking when one is there. Sometimes i hear them, see them or feel them.
It’s always hard to say good-bye but just like with humans there truly is no death just a change in form.

Wonderful and truthful post Karen, thank you for sharing that.

I’ve got my own story to share on this subject. I’m not a psychic and have never encountered any spirits throughout my life. However, I did lose my 19 year old Cocker Spaniel back on Sept. 10 of 05. I had to put him down due to his health failing and I carried that guilt for the next two years.

I went to a meeting with a friend and a lady approached me during one of their breaks and asked me if I had a dog. I told her I did but he had passed away two years before that. She told me he was laying at my feet. She then told me that he was always with me and she could sense the love he had for me. To say the least, I lost it!

I was so happy to hear that he was still with me and that he loved me and didn’t blame me for putting him down. I loved that dog so much and it broke my heart to do that but I couldn’t let him live like that any longer. But since this was the first dog of mine that I had to do that to, it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

Since that time, I’ve had several psychics tell me that he’s still laying at my feet. I started learning more about meditating late last year and I’ve now seen him in my meditations numerous times along with my Dad. They are both together and it brings me such peace.

Had to share that story and I’m just a boohooing as I share this with you. He’s been gone six years and my Dad eight but it still seems like yesterday for them both.

Thank you for reiterating what I already knew but it sure is nice to hear someone else share this for me.

Thanks for this post, my family dog just passed away last month peacefully in his sleep, after 18/19 years of happy years with us. It was painful and hard to deal with but we are grateful he passed in his sleep, no disease and no suffering of any kind. It’s very comforting to know he’s still with us, although he’s no longer with us physically, we want him to know that we still love him and will remember him forever, despite any more new pets we may have after him. Do you think they know that they are still remembered and loved after they pass away?
