Have you ever met someone who constantly complains about how much pain they’re in, how much medicine they take or how sick they are…or, a person who makes frequent public announcements (via phone, text, email, and every other communication method possible) giving minute-by-minute details of each ailment while they’re at the doctor’s office as if they have receiving an award…or, a person who believes, and openly expresses, that pain and suffering is inevitable, so why bother working to achieve optimal health? Well, as frustrating as this may be to hear or witness, in the minds of the people that live this experience, their feelings are valid.
Having grown up in a house where I witnessed my mother suffer for years and finally succumb to cancer, I can give personal testimony regarding how devastating it is to watch dis-ease ravage the very person you love most in life and the family that survives. Given this history, and as a health and wellness enthusiast, I used to wonder why anyone would not fully embrace optimal health.
However, over the years, I have come to better understand there are many reasons why these mindsets exist and in many cases it actually begins with the internal beliefs system of the person it effects…for example:
- Fear of “God’s Will.” Some people are of the mindset that God is a vengeful, jealous, punishing God and somehow they must have done something in their life to deserve challenged health (Karma).
Yet, if we truly believe that God is 100% pure love, that you are God’s precious child, and He loves you (unconditionally) more than you can possibly imagine, then you must understand that God would never Will anything but love, goodness, and wellbeing to his children. God would never “test” us and use pain as a way to make us to grow. We were each sent to this earth with a mission and God needs all hands on deck to accomplish His Will. Therefore, we are far more useful on this planet in optimal health.
- Confusion about Pain and Suffering. Many people believe that pain and suffering is inevitable and therefore they are to just live with it. Others believe that pain and suffering is the only route to personal and spiritual growth.
Although it is true that we can experience growth in times of challenge, it is much easier to evolve when your body, mind and soul are in harmony and experiencing peak wellness.
- Fear of Change. Let’s face it, for some people, chronic illness or injury can become a lifestyle…with ongoing doctors visits and medications, it can become a very long term and busy project. A Course in Miracles: Manual for Teachers says that “all forms of sickness even unto death, are physical expression of the fear of awakening.” Many people are so afraid to look inside and discover who they really are, that they keep their schedules tied in a knot with chronic conditions.
- Secondary Gain. Then, there are the people who gather lots of attention (by way of sympathy from cards, calls, emails, text messages, and believe it or not through social media). They may get out of having to play a particular role at home or work…a sort of respite if you will. So, they unconsciously crave the attention and rewards, thereby manifesting more illness and resisting optimal health and wellness.
- Fixed Ideas About Health. Many people believe that because someone in their family had an illness, inheritance is inevitable.
My Message to You…
If you are a person who carefully maintains this type of belief system, give yourself permission to LET GO! When part of you wants to be healthy, but the other part of you is secretly afraid, you block your blessings.
Know that everything you do in life is by choice, and guess what?… You are FREE to choose again. You are a child of God, deserving of every good thing…abundance, joy, balance, optimal health and wellness. When you are whole and healthy, you are in a better position to help yourself, your loved ones, and serve your community.
